Greetings and welcome to NASPAAM, CHAPTER OF HAMPTON ROADS' official website. We are honored to be the first local chapter of this national organization.
The National Association for the Study and Performance of African-American Music was organized in 1972 in Atlanta, Georgia as the National Black Music Caucus. Two-hundred black musicians attending the biennial meeting of the Music Educators National Conference gathered at Morehouse College to protest their exclusion from MENC divisional and national planning sessions and programs.
NASPAAM is an organization whose purpose is to further the development and dissemination of African- American music through advocacy, education, and performance. The organization is committed to providing leadership and motivation for music educators, musicians, and others interested in fostering the inclusion of African and African- American music in education and society. The organization serves its members and others by increasing the awareness of Black Music and its contribution to the arts, culture, and society.
On our website, you can find information about Hampton Roads' offerings as it is committed to fostering the ideals of NASPAAM.
